EADS Defence and Security Systems

EADS Defence and Security Systems (EADS DS UK) is the Systems House for EADS in the UK. Employing over 700 people and headquartered in Newport, South Wales, the EADS DS UK vocation is to create complete communication and information systems solutions.

EADS DS UK fulfils all requirements in the area of air and naval defence, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, as well as advanced command, control and communication (C3I) systems, professional mobile radio and homeland security.

The Brief

Bbi won this design & build contract to undertake the interior design and fit-out of a 'Spec' building with the objective of upgrading the accommodation to become a UK Headquarters building. The package comprised reception, restaurant, boardroom and general office fit-out involving floor and wall coverings, architectural lighting and Bbi's unique 'Pod' offices.

Space Transformation

The challenge with this project was to transform a 'Spec' building into a prestigious UK Headquarters. BBI's design department set about the task with relish! Boring corridors were enhanced with sculptured glass and then illuminated by blue and white LEDs.

A staff restaurant and VIP eating area was created utilising curved partitioning with a vibrant Italian plastered finish. A reception desk was designed to change colour throughout the day, reflecting EADS DS's corporate colours.

A state of the art boardroom was created complete with hi-tech media wall and 'Pod' offices were designed and built around the central columns of the building to give staff, rather than managers, window views and maximum daylight.

AIS Award

Bbi submitted this project to be independently scrutinised and externally judged as part of the prestigious AIS awards. In issuing a Contractors Award to Bbi, the judges stated:

“This truly is an inspired fit-out, which changes completely the image of Government [contractors]. Colourful, spacious reception, with focus on an illuminated desk front which changes colour.

The kitchen, restaurant and break-out areas have strategically placed down lights and curved partitions with attractive recesses and openings are all decorated with startling wall coverings. Special design attention has been given to the link corridor which with its off wall glass cladding, up & down LED lighting, tends to change the aura.

The boardroom seems more business like with its long veneered table and two dozen chairs. The circular 'Pod' offices are extremely well designed, built and decorated, with effective glass manifestations. Furnishings, decorations and floor coverings have been well chosen and seem to identify the required area moods. The ceiling work is all to a high standard.
