DCWW Ponthir

Transport Maintenance Garage, Ponthir

Project value

£420k | Time scale: 30 weeks

The client

Dwr Cymru Welsh Water is a not for profit organisation employing more than 1800 employees across various sites in Wales.

The design brief

Bbi were commissioned to design and convert a disused 1950's water treatment building into a flagship Transport Maintenance Garage.

The facility and entry routes had to be designed to services and maintain the extensive DWR Cymru fleet vehicles from small cars to ton HGVs.

Project delivery

Prior to the specialist garage fit-out the project brief called for an extensive civils and structural engineering scheme.

The enabling works required the decommissioning of below ground treatment tanks, the construction of lorry wash and lorry lift, new entry road, level and landscape adjacent land, approx. 90m2 to form hard standing parking area and road widening works. The back filling of the tanks alone required over 22 mixer truckloads of aerated concrete.

Once the rebuild and civil works were complete a specialist garage fit-out was taken incorporating a new 20m pre-build steel inspection pit along with 'state of the art' diagnostic and test facilities.

The highly energy efficient M&E installation incorporated a new lighting design and passive solar and PIR dimming control, A/C utilising air sock distribution.
